En hommage à Chellappan, le 6 février 2020, je pose nu une journée entière devant 19 étudiants du College of Fine Arts de Trivandrum dans le Kerala en Inde. Il en résulte 19 peintures.

Histoire de Chellappan :

En février 2007, j'arpentais la ville de Trivandrum au Kerala en Inde quand, dans un jardin entourant une grande bâtisse rouge d'époque coloniale, mon regard fut attiré par une sculpture de plâtre représentant un personnage de plain-pied, torse nu, vêtu simplement de son traditionnel dhoti. Je la photographiai lorsqu'un homme entra dans le cadre. Je fus saisi par sa ressemblance avec la sculpture. Je m'approchai de lui, il me prit doucement la main pour une visite du jardin. Il me désigna ici et là, des bustes de plâtre jetés à même le sol, dégradés par le temps et voués à être dissous par les pluies diluviennes des moussons. Cette visite se passa sans un mot, uniquement par les gestes de cet homme qui de son index me désignait l'un après l'autre chacun des vingt-huit bustes puis son visage, certifiant ainsi qu'il s'agissait bien de lui. Toujours main dans la main, j'entrai avec lui dans la bâtisse et découvris qu'il s'agissait du College of Fine Arts de Trivandrum. L'une des nombreuses écoles d'art construite en 1881 durant l'empire britannique par Moolam Thirunal Sir Rama Varma, maharaja de l'état de Travancore.
Fortement marqué par cette rencontre, je décidai le lendemain de retourner sur les lieux. Je pénétrai dans le département de sculpture et y retrouvai cet homme, toujours torse nu en train de poser devant un groupe d'étudiants. J'observai la rigueur avec laquelle il s'appliquait à tenir la pose. La chaleur était accablante et au fur et à mesure des heures, cet homme vieillissant à la peau burinée luttait pour tenir la pose à la perfection. J'appris son nom : Chellappan. Les jours passant, je me rendis compte qu'il était le modèle vivant le plus prisé de cette école. Il était très proche des étudiants dont il était à la fois le modèle, l'ami et le père symbolique. Ils partageaient ensemble leurs repas mais personne ne semblait savoir grand-chose de la vie privée de Chellappan. Il était devenu une icône, un personnage public, une star locale mais son regard laissait entrevoir une grande solitude. Depuis plusieurs décennies il allait et venait dans cette école, attendant d'être sollicité et payé pour une séance de pose. C'était son unique moyen de subsistance. Pour des générations d'étudiants, il représentait le modèle vivant idéal, irremplaçable. Il parlait uniquement malayalam et nous ne pouvions communiquer que par gestes ou en anglais par l'intermédiaire des étudiants. Pendant des années, son visage avait fait l'objet d'innombrables études en terre pour ensuite être moulées en plâtre. Au fil du temps les moulages se retrouvaient au rebut, disséminés à même la terre de ce jardin et voués à se décomposer.
En mars 2007, de retour en France, les multiples visages de Chellappan me hantaient. J'avais pu observer la ferveur avec laquelle les étudiants travaillaient pour acquérir les codes de représentation issus de l'héritage colonial. À leurs yeux, Chellappan était l'archétype de l'Indien des temps anciens. J'étais appelé à le revoir car bien décidé à produire une œuvre qui témoigne de sa vie, de son travail. Ainsi en décembre 2007, je décidai de retourner à Trivandrum. Avec un groupe d'étudiants et la complicité de Chellappan, nous avons réalisé un moulage précis de chacun des bustes dans leur état de ruine. Chellappan était fier et heureux du projet de se savoir exposé en Europe. Enfin, je le payai pour poser pendant 25 minutes devant ma caméra. Ce fut son premier et dernier film.
En avril 2010 j'appris qu'il s'était suicidé après une ultime pose. Profondément affecté par cette nouvelle, je me souvenais qu'en faisant ce projet d'installation avec lui, j'avais l'étrange prémonition qu'il disparaîtrait après coup. En février 2020, je me rendis à nouveau dans l'école. Les bustes en plâtre avaient disparu avec le temps. Je me sentais dépositaire d'une partie de l'histoire de Chellappan que j'avais préservée par les moulages et le film. Je rencontrai deux des derniers modèles vivants de l'école qui l'avaient bien connu. Un homme, Krishnapillai et une femme, Laila. Je décidai de réaliser un portrait filmé de chacun en recueillant leurs témoignages sur la vie et les derniers jours de Chellappan. Les convergences et les divergences de ces deux récits participaient à alimenter les mystères autour de cet homme qui encore aujourd'hui continue de hanter l'école. Ayant appris des étudiants qu'il leur était impossible de peindre un modèle nu, ceci étant socialement proscrit, je leur proposai de poser nu une journée, de rendre ainsi un ultime hommage à Chellappan. Cela eut lieu dans un entrepôt en périphérie de Trivandrum. Le 6 février 2020, 19 peintures furent ainsi produites par les étudiants qui me confièrent leur difficulté à trouver la carnation du « modèle blanc ».

Chellappan'story

Roaming the streets of Trivandrum in Kerala State, India in February 2007, I came across a grand, red manor from the colonial period surrounded by a garden. There, a life-size plaster sculpture of a bare-chested man wearing only a traditional dhoti caught my eye. I was taking photos of it when a man walked into the frame. I was struck by his resemblance to the sculpture.

I approached him and he took me gently by the hand to take a tour of the garden. He showed me plaster busts laying here and there on the ground, disintegrated by the weather and destined to be dissolved by the torrential rain of the monsoons. This tour took place without a word, only through gesticulations. The man pointed out each of the 28 busts and then to his own face with his index finger, as to certify that they were indeed of him. Still hand in hand, I entered the manor with him and discovered that it was the College of Fine Arts of Trivandrum, one of the many art schools built in 1881 under the British Empire by Moolam Thirunal Sir Rama Varma, the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Travancore.

Deeply struck by this encounter, I decided to go back the next day. I went straight to the sculpture department and found the same man, still bare-chested, posing for a group of students. I noticed how seriously he applied himself to keep the pose. It was unbearably hot and as the hours passed this aging man, with heavily line skin, struggled to maintain the perfect pose. I learned that his name was Chellappan. Days later I realized that he was the most sought after live model at the school. He was very close with the students, besides being their model, he was also a friend and a father figure. They shared their meals together but nobody really seemed to know much about Chellappan's private life. He had become an icon, a public figure, a local star but the look in his eyes was one of deep inner solitude.

For several decades he came and went in the school, waiting to be hired and paid for a posing session. It was his only means of subsistence. For generations of students, he was the ideal living model, there was just no one else like him. He spoke only Malayalam so we could only communicate with our hands or in English with students translating. For many years his face was the focal point of countless studies in clay, that were then molded into plaster. As time went on the molds were scrapped and tossed out into the garden left to decompose.

In March 2007, back in France, the many faces of Chellappan haunted me. I had seen the fervor of the students working to acquire a mode of representation handed down from the colonial era. In their eyes Chellappan was the archetype of the Indian from times past. I was called by some force to see him again and create a piece bearing witness to his life and work. That's how I decided to return to Trivandrum in December 2007.

With a group of students and the cooperation of Chellappan, we created an exact mold for every one of the busts lying in a state of ruin. Chellappan was proud and happy with the idea that he would be exhibited in Europe. In the end I paid him to pose for 25 minutes in front of my camera. It was his first and last film. In April 2010 I found out that he had committed suicide after a final posing session. Profoundly affected by the news, I recalled a strange premonition I had while working on the installation project with him, the premonition that he himself would disappear afterwards.

In February 2020, I went back to the school again. The plaster busts had disappeared with the passing of time. I felt like the caretaker of the part of Chellappan's history that I had preserved in molds and on film. I met with two of the last live models who had known him: a man, Krishnapillai and a woman, Laila. I decided to create a portrait on film of each one of them bearing witness to the life and last days of Chellappan. How the two stories intersect and diverge from one another heightens the mystery surrounding him that continues to haunt the school.

Having learned that it was impossible for students to paint a nude model, because of certain codes of social conduct, I offered to pose nude for a day. It was my way of paying a final tribute to Chellappan. It took place in a warehouse on the outskirts of Trivandrum. On the 6th of February 2020, 19 paintings were made by students who confided how difficult it was to recreate the likeness of a “white model”.
